Cultivating fertile Ground: People | Make | Places event

Thursday, 10 March 2016 from 17:30 to 20:30 / Free

Café Ollo - The Media Centre. Northumberland Street. Huddersfield HD1 1RL GB

Exploring how individual artists specialising in place-making contribute to transforming difficult areas into places in which people choose to live, work, play and invest.

Place-making is a shorthand term for the practice of creating, maintaining or enhancing a location’s identity and sense of place. The multi-faceted approach to planning, design and management of public spaces which draws on existing cultural and physical resources to create an ecology that promote people’s health, happiness and wellbeing offers a fertile ground for artists whose work is concerned with social change and community action. The event will include contributions from artists specialising in place-making and socially engaged practice; Jean McEwan, Steve Pool & Kate Genever, and Rachel Howfield-Massey. Led by Susan Jones, visual arts consultant, researcher and adviser who currently writes for The Guardian and Arts Professional.
