KULES is an annual artists’ residency in Stoke-on-Trent that seeks to offer artists the opportunity to develop new works and engage with a city that has a rich industrial heritage and unique resources. KULES aims to provide venues and environments for artistic research and to use disused industrial spaces throughout the city in a series of itinerant projects, moving from venue to venue with each new intake of artists. The residency programme is intended to be a public facing, location-specific, urban project with a strong learning element with each year’s artists invited to modify the programme and help build the following year’s theme.

Early and mid career artists working in any medium are invited to respond to this year’s theme The Public As Material. This may be interpreted as a desire to directly involve people in performance activities or in the making of forms or environments that are activated by a human presence or intervention.
