Assistant Keeper (Art)

  • £20,541 - £23,111 per annum
  • 37 hours per week
  • Fixed term until 31 December 2019

This is an exciting time to join the Art Team at Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums, to work on two projects: curating a new ceramic collection based at the Shipley Art Gallery and coordinating a conservation project at the Hatton Gallery. We are currently seeking an Assistant Keeper of Art to work with our Art Keepers to provide curatorial support and to generate exhibition and displays related to assigned collections. The post will mainly work across the Hatton Gallery and Shipley Art Gallery but will also have the opportunity to work at the Laing Art Gallery. We are seeking an enthusiastic, energetic curator with a thirst for a varied, challenging and busy working environment. This is an ideal opportunity to develop skills to become an experienced, flexible and multi-skilled art curator.

Exhibitions Officer

  • £23,866- £27,358 per annum, pro-rata

If you are enthusiastic, creative and committed don’t miss this exciting opportunity to join our art team in curating and delivering exhibitions across the Laing Art Gallery, Hatton Gallery and Shipley Art Gallery. You will develop, manage and deliver a varied and challenging programme of engaging exhibitions and events. Working within the heritage context of each gallery you will have a commitment to working with artists and developing engaging programmes that will enthuse audiences. With a degree or equivalent qualification/ experience in art/history of art, you will have experience of working in galleries and/or museums and of delivering major temporary exhibitions. You will also be an effective team worker with the confidence and ability to lead creatively and work closely with colleagues in regional and national museums to ensure delivery of a high quality product. It is essential that the post holder has the ability to work on their own initiative, is self-motivated, a good communicator and very well organised.

Keeper of Art

This post offers an exciting opportunity for a creative, motivated art specialist to join the art team at Tyne and Wear Archives & Museums. We are seeking a Keeper of Art to manage the collections at the Hatton Gallery and to work with the art team under the direction of the Chief Curator to deliver the art galleries exhibition programme. The post holder will be mainly based at the Hatton Gallery but will also work between the Laing Art Gallery and Shipley Art Gallery with a close team of colleagues. The Hatton Gallery on Newcastle University’s campus has recently undergone a £3.8 million refurbishment. Gallery improvements include the conservation of the architectural and historical elements of the building alongside the modernisation of gallery spaces allowing for flexible exhibition facilities, a dedicated multi - purpose learning space, improved lighting, a new picture store and conservation and reinterpretation of Kurt Schwitters’ iconic Merz Barn Wall. A degree or equivalent qualification or experience in art/art history with a strong interest in modern art, experience of managing staff or volunteers, of working with collections including documentation, interpretation and exhibition organisation are essential.
